Gunashekar (गुणशेखर) joins Sanskrit guṇa, "virtue" or "good quality", and śekhara. Monier-Williams gives śekhara as the crown of the head, a chaplet or crest worn there, and, at the end of a compound, the best or chief of something. So the name means "crown of virtues", the best among the virtuous. Name lists usually give it as "virtuous king". The crown and head senses explain that reading, though the dictionary does not give śekhara as "king". The name is used mainly in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu; the Telugu film director Gunasekhar, maker of Okkadu, uses that spelling.
