Manish (मनीष) is usually explained on Indian name lists as "lord of the mind", splitting it into man, "mind", and īś, "lord". The spelling points elsewhere. In Hindi the name is written with ष (ṣ), the letter in Sanskrit manīṣā, while īśa, "lord", has श (ś). Monier-Williams gives manīṣā as thought, reflection, wisdom, intelligence and conception, and in the Ṛgveda also a prayer or hymn, or a wish. So the name most likely comes from manīṣā, "wisdom", in a masculine form. The "lord of the mind" reading is a popular explanation rather than the recorded one, though both point to the mind and intellect.
