Meera (मीरा) is best known as the name of Mirabai, the sixteenth-century Rajput princess and poet-saint whose songs of devotion to Krishna remain widely loved in northern India. Britannica records her as the only child of Ratan Singh of Merta, married into the ruling house of Mewar, and persecuted by her in-laws after she was widowed. Because of her, name lists usually explain Meera as "devotee of Krishna", and some also give "prosperous". Monier-Williams has no entry for a feminine Mīrā, but it lists the masculine mīra, "the sea, ocean". The name is often linked to that word, though the connection rests on the shared form rather than on any dictionary statement.
