Nauman (نعمان) is the Arabic Nuʿmān, an old Arabian personal name. Steingass's dictionary gives nuʿmān as "blood", records it as the name of the pre-Islamic kings of al-Ḥīra, and notes that shaqāʾiq al-nuʿmān is the red anemone. On name lists today Nauman is usually given as "blessing" or "grace", because it shares its root, n-ʿ-m, with niʿma, "blessing", and naʿīm, "bliss"; the dictionaries do not give that sense for nuʿmān itself. The name is honoured through Abu Hanifa, al-Nuʿmān ibn Thābit, the 8th-century jurist whose Hanafi school most South Asian Sunnis follow.
