Naushad (نوشاد) is a Persian name. Steingass and Platts both record naushād only as the name of a city famous for the beauty of its inhabitants, a place that appears in Persian poetry as a byword for handsome people. On name lists the name is usually given as "happy" or "joyful". That reading treats it as nau, "new", plus shād, which Steingass defines as cheerful, glad and happy; the dictionaries do not list that compound, so it is best seen as a popular explanation. The best-known bearer is Naushad Ali, the composer of Mughal-e-Azam and Baiju Bawra.
