Lane's lexicon describes the namir as a well-known spotted wild beast, said to be bolder than the lion and named for the spots (numar) on its coat. The diminutive form, "little leopard", is an old Arabian name: Banū Numayr was a tribe of central Arabia. Name lists give Numair as "panther" or "little leopard". It is short and easy to say in Indian languages.
