Ponnambalam meaning
Ponnambalam (பொன்னம்பலம்) is a Tamil and Hindu boy's name.
A golden hall; the gilded hall of Nataraja at Chidambaram
Ponnambalam (பொன்னம்பலம்) joins poṉ, "gold", with ampalam, "hall". The Tamil Lexicon defines poṉṉampalam as a hall of gold and, specifically, the golden hall of Chidambaram, where Shiva is worshipped as Nataraja, the cosmic dancer; its roof is said to have been covered in gold by the Chola king Parantaka I. Naming a son Ponnambalam honours the dancing Shiva of that shrine. Among Sri Lankan Tamils a well-known bearer was the political leader G. G. Ponnambalam.
