Punya meaning
Punya (पुण्या) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin.
Auspicious, good; virtuous, meritorious, pure, holy
Also used to mean: virtue
Punya (पुण्या) comes from the Sanskrit adjective puṇya, which Monier-Williams traces to the Rigveda in senses running from auspicious and fair to good, virtuous, meritorious, pure and holy. As a noun puṇya is religious merit, the good that comes from right action, a word still used every day across India. The feminine puṇyā also names the holy basil, tulsi, and a daughter of the sage Kratu in the Vishnu Purana. Name lists give "virtuous", "pure" or "merit", all of which match. It is mainly a girls' name, occasionally given to boys.
