Rhoda meaning
Rhoda is a Christian girl's name of Greek origin.
A rose
Rhoda is the Greek name Rhodē, which Strong's Concordance explains as probably the word rhodē, 'a rose'. The same Greek word gives the rhododendron, the 'rose tree'. Rhoda appears once in the Bible, in Acts 12: when Peter, freed from prison by an angel, knocked at the gate of the house where believers were praying, the servant girl Rhoda recognised his voice and was so overjoyed that she ran to tell everyone before letting him in. The story has made her a favourite of Sunday-school lessons. In India the name is chosen by some Christian families as a gentler alternative to Rose.
