Shruti meaning
Shruti (श्रुति) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin.
Hearing; what is heard; sacred knowledge, the Veda; a quarter tone
Shruti (श्रुति) is the Sanskrit śruti, "hearing" and "that which is heard". Monier-Williams gives it as the ear and the power of hearing, a sound, a report or saying, and above all sacred knowledge handed down by hearing: the Veda, as opposed to smṛti, "what is remembered", the later tradition. In music śruti is the smallest interval, a quarter tone, and twenty-two śrutis are counted in the octave. MW also records Śruti as the name of a daughter of the sage Atri, the wife of Kardama. Name lists give the same senses, linking the name to the Vedas and to musical pitch. Sruthi and Shruthi are South Indian spellings.
