Shreya (श्रेया) is built on Sanskrit śreyas, which Monier-Williams glosses as more splendid, superior, preferable or better, and also as auspicious, fortunate and conducive to welfare. As a noun it means the better state, good fortune, welfare and bliss, and even the bliss of final liberation; MW cites the Kaṭha Upaniṣad for the sense of the true good. The name's form śreyā is not itself a dictionary headword, and in classical Sanskrit the feminine of śreyas is śreyasī, so Shreya is a modern name formed from the root word. Name lists usually give "auspicious" or "fortunate", which match the dictionary. Sreya is another spelling, and Shreyas is the masculine counterpart.
