Somashekhar meaning
Somashekhar (सोमशेखर) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin (Kannada and Telugu usage). By its first sound, सो, it is a Kumbh rashi name (Purva Bhadrapada nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
Having the moon as his crest, i.e. Śiva
Also used to mean: moon-crested, Lord Shiva
Somashekhar (सोमशेखर) joins soma and śekhara. Monier-Williams explains soma first as the sacred Soma plant and its juice, which later tradition identified with the moon, and śekhara as the crown of the head or a crest or diadem. Together they mean "one whose crest is the moon", a description of Shiva, who wears the crescent moon in his hair, like the name Chandrashekhar. The name is used mainly in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, written Somashekhar, Somashekar or Somasekhar.
