Sougata (सौगत) is the Bengali spelling of Sanskrit saugata, a word formed from sugata, "well-gone", one of the titles of the Buddha. Monier-Williams gives saugata as "Buddhistic" or "a Buddhist", and also as the name of one of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons in the Mahabharata. Name lists today usually say the name means "blessed" or "fortunate"; that echoes the root sugata but is not how the dictionary defines saugata. The politician Saugata Roy is a well-known bearer in West Bengal.
