Ushasi (उषसी, Bengali ঊষসী) is a Bengali name close to Sanskrit uṣasī. Monier-Williams records uṣasī, from the old lexicographers, as "the end of day, twilight", while the related uṣas is "morning light, dawn", the Vedic goddess of the dawn and daughter of the sky, from which the name Usha also comes. Name lists give Ushasi as "dawn" or "morning". That is the sense of uṣas; for uṣasī itself the dictionary has twilight at the end of the day, so the popular meaning is a reasonable family resemblance rather than the exact word sense.
