Velan meaning
Velan (வேலன்) is a Tamil and Hindu boy's name.
Spear-bearer: Skanda (Murugan); also a priest of Murugan
Velan (வேலன்) means "the one with the vēl", the spear. The Tamil Lexicon of the University of Madras gives vēlaṉ as a spearman, as Skanda, that is Murugan, and as a priest who worships Murugan, quoting line 222 of the Sangam poem Tirumurukāṟṟuppaṭai. The vēl is Murugan's emblem, carried and worshipped at his shrines, so Vēlaṉ is one of his most familiar names, alongside Vēlavaṉ and Vēlāyutaṉ, "he who has the spear as his weapon". Name lists give "spear-bearer" or simply Murugan. Velan is a boys' name, chosen especially by families devoted to Murugan.
