Velayudham meaning
Velayudham (வேலாயுதம்) is a Tamil and Hindu boy's name.
The spear as weapon; Murugan, who wields the lance
Also used to mean: murugan's spear
Velayudham (வேலாயுதம்) means 'the spear as weapon', from Tamil vēl, a lance, and Sanskrit āyudha, a weapon. The Tamil Lexicon of the University of Madras records vēlāyutam for the weapon itself and vēlāyutaṉ for Skanda 'as wielding the lance', quoting Arunagirinathar. In practice both forms are names of Murugan, who is shown holding the vel in almost every Tamil temple. Velayudham is a Tamil boys' name, Velayudhan is the form used in Kerala, and the short form is Velu.
