Victory, conquest, triumph
Vijay (विजय) is the Sanskrit vijaya, "victory, conquest, triumph", which is jaya with the prefix vi-. Monier-Williams adds the prize of victory, a particular hour of the day, and a divine chariot. As an adjective it means victorious or leading to victory. The dictionary lists Vijaya as a name of Arjuna in the Mahabharata, of an attendant of Viṣṇu in the Bhāgavata Purāṇa, of one of King Daśaratha's eight councillors, and of the prince it calls the founder of Buddhist civilisation in Ceylon. Indian name lists give Vijay as "victory", which matches. It is the root of names such as Vijayalakshmi and Vijayendra.
