The origin of Zainab (زینب) was already debated by the classical Arabic lexicographers. Lisān al-ʿArab records Ibn al-Aʿrābī's view that it comes from the zaynab, a handsome, sweet-smelling tree, and Abū ʿAmr's link to aznab, "short and plump". Al-Fīrūzābādī mentions a contraction of zayn ab, "adornment of a father", and al-Zabīdī treats it as an original proper name. Name lists today mostly give "father's adornment" or "fragrant flower", which follow two of these old explanations. The name is honoured through women of the Prophet's family: his eldest daughter Zaynab, and his granddaughter Zaynab bint ʿAlī, who after Karbala was taken captive to Kufa and Damascus and, in Shia tradition, rebuked her captors there.
