Aashna (आशना, آشنا) is a Persian word that came into Hindi and Urdu. Steingass's Persian dictionary defines āshnā as a friend, companion or acquaintance, someone known and close; the same spelling also means "swimming", which is a different word. In Urdu poetry and everyday speech, āshnā also came to mean an intimate friend or lover, and Indian name lists usually give the name as "beloved" or "devoted to love". Aashna is used by Hindu and Muslim families alike, often spelled Ashna.
