Abhiraj (अभिराज) joins the Sanskrit prefix abhi-, "towards, over", to rāj, "to reign" or "to shine". Monier-Williams records abhirāj as an adjective meaning "reigning everywhere", from the Kauśika-sūtra, and the verb abhi-rāj, "to shine, be brilliant", from the Mahābhārata. On name lists Abhiraj is usually given as "fearless king". That reading takes the first part as abhī, a real Sanskrit word for "fearless", but the name is written with a short i, so the dictionary sense "reigning everywhere" fits the spelling better. Either way the name carries the idea of a king.
