Arulnithi (அருள்நிதி) joins Tamil aruḷ, "grace, mercy", with niti, which the Tamil Lexicon takes from Sanskrit nidhi and defines as a treasure-hoard or gold. The name means "treasure of grace", a Tamil echo of the Sanskrit name Karunanidhi, "treasure of compassion". Some name sites read the ending as nīti, "justice, righteousness", but the name is written with niti, "treasure". The best-known bearer is the Tamil film actor Arulnithi, a grandson of the former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
