Binapani meaning
Binapani (वीणापाणि) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin (Odia and Bengali usage). By its first sound, वी, it is a Vrishabh rashi name (Rohini nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
Holding a vina; as a feminine name, Saraswati, goddess of learning
Binapani (ବୀଣାପାଣି, Sanskrit वीणापाणि) means "she who holds the vina in her hand", from vīṇā, the Indian lute, and pāṇi, "hand". In Odia and Bengali it is a name of Saraswati, the goddess of learning, who is usually pictured with a vina; Praharaj's Odia dictionary gives exactly this sense for the feminine. Monier-Williams knows the compound only in the masculine, as "Lute-hand", a title of the sage Nārada, who was believed to have invented the instrument. Odia writes Sanskrit v as b, hence Binapani. A celebrated bearer was Binapani Mohanty, the Odia short-story writer who received the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Padma Shri.
In Hindu tradition this is a name of Saraswati.
