Elisha is the prophet who took up Elijah's mantle in the Second Book of Kings and performed many miracles, from purifying a spring to healing Naaman the Syrian. Strong's Concordance treats the name as a short form of Elishua, from el, 'God', and a word for a cry for help, and glosses it 'God of supplication', or possibly 'of riches'. Name lists usually give 'God is salvation', reading the second part as the verb 'to save'. Christian families use it for boys, while in wider Indian usage Elisha is also a girls' name.
