Farhad (فرہاد) is a Persian name from legend. Steingass's dictionary records farhād as the name of a commander in the army of the mythical king Kāwūs, and above all of the lover of Shīrīn, who cut a path through a great mountain to win her; from him the word came to mean a stone-cutter or a digger of mines. The love story of Shirin and Farhad, told by Persian poets such as Nizami, is familiar in India as Shirin-Farhad. Name lists give meanings such as "helper" or "happy"; we could not find these in the dictionary, so they are best treated as uncertain modern glosses.
