Hamid (حامد) is Arabic ḥāmid, "one who praises", from ḥamida, "to praise". Lane's lexicon explains the verb as praising or commending someone and speaking well of him, the opposite of blame; ḥamd is praise and al-ḥamdu lillāh, "praise be to God", comes from the same root. Name lists often say Hamid means "praiseworthy", but that is the meaning of the sister word ḥamīd (Hameed); ḥāmid is the one who gives the praise. The name is used in India, carried for example by the former Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari.
