Junaid

جنید

Say it ju-NAID

Junaid meaning

Junaid (جنید) is a Muslim boy's name of Arabic origin.

Diminutive of jund, 'an army, a body of troops'

Also used to mean: warrior, soldier

Junaid (جنید) is the Arabic junayd, which has the diminutive pattern fuʿayl built on jund, "an army, a military force, a body of troops" (root j-n-d). So the word means something like "a little army" or "a small troop". Lane does not list junayd separately, so this meaning comes from the root word and the pattern. Jund itself occurs in the Quran at 38:11. Name lists today give Junaid as "warrior" or "soldier", a modern sense close to, but not the same as, the dictionary's "army". The name's most celebrated bearer is Abū al-Qāsim al-Junayd of Baghdad (died 910), one of the great masters of early Sufism, linked with the Iraqi school that stressed self-control and inner discipline.
