Manjunath (मंजुनाथ) joins Sanskrit mañju, "beautiful, lovely, charming", and nātha, "lord", so the literal sense is "lovely lord". In Karnataka it is the name of Shiva as worshipped at the Dharmasthala temple, reconsecrated in the sixteenth century by the Dvaita saint Vadiraja Tirtha, and that is the meaning name lists give. Monier-Williams, however, records mañjunātha only as another name of Manjushri, the Buddhist bodhisattva of wisdom. A "lord of snow" reading found online rests on the Kannada word manju, "mist, dew", rather than on Sanskrit. The name is used above all in Karnataka.
