Rania comes from the Arabic verb ranā, 'to gaze'. Lane's lexicon defines it as looking at someone or something continually without moving the eyes, and also as being cheered or delighted, with the heart and eyes both taken up with love. Rāniya is the feminine of its participle, 'one who gazes', and Lane records a related noun, runā, 'a thing people gaze at without moving their eyes, because of its beauty'. In India the name is often explained as 'queen', but that meaning comes from Hindi rānī, a different word of Sanskrit origin that happens to sound alike. The best-known bearer is Queen Rania of Jordan, born Rania al-Yassin in 1970.
