The Gāyatrī verse to Savitṛ; Brahmā's wife; Satyavat's devoted wife
Also used to mean: sun's rays, gayatri
Savitri (सावित्री) is the Sanskrit sāvitrī, "of Savitṛ", the sun-god as giver of life. Monier-Williams gives first the verse of the Rigveda addressed to Savitṛ, the Gāyatrī mantra, and the initiation of a child with it; then the goddess Sāvitrī, wife of Brahmā; and, most famously, Sāvitrī, daughter of King Aśvapati of Madra, whose husband Satyavat was fated to die, and who followed Yama, the god of death, until he returned her husband's life. The Mahābhārata tells her story, still honoured in the Vat Savitri fast. The social reformer Savitribai Phule also carried the name.
