Shahrukh (شاہ رخ) is Persian shāh-rukh. Name lists explain it as shāh, "king", plus rukh, "cheek, face", giving "royal face". Steingass's entry for the compound gives other senses: the horn of a rhinoceros, the rook in chess, a title given to the sons of noblemen, and the name of a son of Timur. That son, Shah Rukh, ruled the Timurid empire from Herat in the fifteenth century. "Royal face" is a fair reading of the parts, but the dictionary does not give it for the compound. Shah Rukh Khan has made the name famous in India.
