Shalini (शालिनी) is the feminine of Sanskrit śālin, a word that ends many compounds with the sense "possessing, abounding in, full of, distinguished for". On its own Monier-Williams gives it as "praiseworthy", and Apte adds "shining or resplendent with". The feminine śālinī is also the name of a Sanskrit metre and is recorded as a woman's name. Indian name lists usually give Shalini as "modest". That sense belongs to a closely related word, śālīna, which the dictionary glosses as "settled, domestic" and "shy, bashful, modest". Both words start from the idea of a house: śālin first means "possessing a house", and śālīna "having a fixed abode".
