Shamik (शमीक) is Sanskrit Śamīka, which Monier-Williams records as the name of various men, above all a sage. In the epic story, King Parīkṣit, finding the sage Śamīka lost in meditation, draped a dead snake around his neck, and the sage's son Śṛṅgin cursed the king to die of snakebite within seven days. Name lists usually give Shamik as "calm" or "peaceful", probably by association with śama, "tranquillity"; that sense is not given for śamīka itself. Shamik is used mainly in Bengal.
