Abbas meaning
Abbas (عباس) is a Muslim boy's name of Arabic origin.
Stern-faced, frowning; also a name for the lion
Abbas (عباس) comes from the Arabic root ʿ-b-s, "to frown". Lane's lexicon explains ʿabbās as one who frowns often or has a stern face, and records ʿabbās, with related forms, as a name for the lion, described as the lion from which other lions flee. That is why name lists today give Abbas as "lion". The name is honoured through al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, the Prophet's uncle, after whom the Abbasid caliphs were named, and through ʿAbbās ibn ʿAlī, who fell at Karbala and is deeply revered by Shia Muslims.
