Durva meaning
Durva (दूर्वा) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, दू, it is a Meen rashi name (Uttara Bhadrapada nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
Dūrvā grass, a sacred panic grass
Durva (दूर्वा) is Sanskrit dūrvā, the bent or panic grass that botanists now call Cynodon dactylon, known in Hindi as dūb. Monier-Williams records the word from the Ṛgveda and the Vājasaneyi Saṃhitā onward and marks its etymology as uncertain. The grass has a special place in Hindu worship: the Śiva Purāṇa prescribes knotted blades of dūrvā for the worship of Gaṇeśa. Baby-name lists give "sacred grass", which matches the dictionary. Durva is a girl's name used in Maharashtra, and in Marathi the name is also written दुर्वा with a short u.
