Fazal meaning

Fazal (فضل) is a Muslim boy's name of Arabic origin.

Excess, superiority, excellence; a free gift, bounty, grace

Fazal (فضل) is the Urdu pronunciation of Arabic faḍl, from the root f-ḍ-l. Lane's lexicon gives its first sense as an excess or surplus, and from this superiority and excellence; it then defines faḍl as a gift the giver was under no obligation to give, an act of bounty or grace, as in the Quranic phrase "ask God of His bounty" (4:32). Steingass gives the Persian and Urdu senses as excellence, virtue and learning, and a gift, favour, grace or bounty. Name lists give "grace" or "bounty". Saiyid Fazl Ali (1886–1959), who chaired the States Reorganisation Commission, is a well-known bearer.
