Gulrez (گلریز) joins Persian gul, "rose", and rez, from rekhtan, "to pour or scatter". Steingass's Persian dictionary defines gul-rez as the strewing of roses or blossoms, and also records it as the name of a flowered silk and a kind of firework. Urdu poets use it for something that showers flowers. Name lists give "scattering flowers"; a few say "rose fragrance", but the word means scattering, not scent. Gulrez is used as a boy's name by Muslim families in India and Pakistan.
