Shams meaning
Shams (شمس) is a Muslim boy's name of Arabic origin.
The sun
Also used to mean: light
Shams (شمس) is the Arabic shams, "the sun". Lane's lexicon defines it as the body of solar light that runs its course in the sky, grammatically feminine and with no true plural, and notes the pre-Islamic name ʿAbd Shams, "servant of the sun". Surah 91 of the Quran takes its name from the word and opens "By the sun and its morning brightness" (91:1). In India Shams is a man's name, often in compounds such as Shamsuddin, "sun of the faith". Its most famous bearer is Shams Tabrizi, the wandering dervish whose friendship transformed the poet Rumi.
