Jaimin (जैमिन) is the Gujarati and Hindi form of Jaimini, the sage remembered as the founder of the Pūrva or Karma-Mīmāṃsā school of philosophy. Monier-Williams records him as a pupil of Vyāsa, who entrusted him with the Sāmaveda, and as a priest at King Janamejaya's snake-sacrifice. The dictionary treats Jaimini only as a proper name and gives it no meaning. Name lists usually give Jaimin as "victorious", apparently by reading jai, "victory", into it; that is a modern sense rather than the word's history. The name is used in Gujarat, where it is also spelt Jaymin.
