Noorjahan meaning
Noorjahan (نور جہاں) is a Muslim girl's name of Arabic and Persian origin.
Light of the world
Noorjahan (نور جہاں) joins Arabic nūr, "light", with Persian jahān, "the world", both listed in Steingass, to mean "light of the world". The compound itself is not a dictionary headword. The name is closely tied to Nur Jahan (1577–1645), born Mehr un-Nissa in Kandahar, who married the Mughal emperor Jahangir in 1611 and was given the name Nur Jahan. Many historians see her as the empire's de facto ruler in his later years: she issued decrees, had coins struck in her name and built her father's tomb, Itimad-ud-Daulah, in Agra. In the 20th century the singer and actress Noor Jehan, honoured in Pakistan as Malika-e-Tarannum, "Queen of Melody", carried the name.
