Paras meaning
Paras (पारस) is a Hindu boy's name of Hindi origin (from Sanskrit sparśa). By its first sound, पा, it is a Kanya rashi name (Uttara Phalguni nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
Touchstone; the philosopher's stone that turns metal to gold
Paras (पारस) is the Hindi word for the touchstone. Platts' Hindustani dictionary defines pāras as a touchstone for testing gems and as the philosopher's stone which, in Hindu legend, turns any metal it touches into gold, and derives the word from Sanskrit sparśa, "touch". Sanskrit has a matching compound, sparśa-maṇi, "touch-jewel", which Monier-Williams gives with the same two senses. Platts also lists pāras-patthar, the stone itself, from sparśa and prastara, "stone". Name lists give Paras as "touchstone", which matches the dictionary.
