Purbasha meaning
Purbasha (पूर्वाशा) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin (Bengali usage). By its first sound, पू, it is a Kanya rashi name (Hasta nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
The east
Purbasha (पूर्वाशा, Bengali পূর্বাশা) is the Sanskrit pūrvāśā, which Monier-Williams defines simply as "the east". It joins pūrva, a word for what is in front or first and also for what is eastern, with āśā, a region or quarter of the heavens. The name therefore points to the eastern sky, the direction of sunrise. Sanskrit also has a second word āśā, meaning wish, desire or hope, which is spelt the same way, but the dictionary compound is about direction. Bengali pronounces the Sanskrit v as b, so pūrvāśā becomes Purbasha, written পূর্বাশা. Another name on our site meaning the east is Prachi.
