Rihaan (रिहान) is used by Muslim and Hindu families, and the two explain it differently. For Muslim families it is a spelling of Arabic rayḥān (ریحان), the name also written Rehan and Rayhan. Lane's Arabic–English Lexicon gives rayḥān as sweet basil or any sweet-smelling plant, and figuratively as offspring and as God's bounty; the Quran uses the word for fragrant plants (55:12). On Hindu name lists Rihaan is a modern boy's name given as "God's chosen one" or "Lord Vishnu"; we found no Sanskrit word behind it and no source for those meanings. Urdu dictionaries also record rihān, "a pledge or wager", a different word that is not the name.
