It is usually traced to the ruby, through Latin rubinus, "red", rather than to an Arabic or Persian word, and we could not find it in Steingass's Persian dictionary or Platts's Urdu dictionary; the usual Urdu word for ruby is yāqūt or laʿl. Even so, Rubina is used by Muslim families in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, and also by Hindu families. It is often spelled Rubeena.
