Saima meaning
Saima (صائمہ) is a Muslim girl's name of Arabic origin.
A woman who fasts; one who abstains
Saima is the feminine of Arabic ṣāʼim, 'fasting', from the root ṣ-w-m. Lane's lexicon explains that the word first meant simply abstaining from something, and in religious usage came to mean keeping the fast, abstaining from food, drink and intercourse for a set time; it is applied to a man and equally to a woman. The same verb could describe a horse standing still without eating, or the midday sun seeming to pause. The Quran praises the men and women who fast (33:35), using the plural of this very word. Baby-name lists give 'a woman who fasts' or 'pious', which follows the dictionary. The name is used by Muslim families in Pakistan and India.
