Talha (طلحہ) is the Arabic ṭalḥa, a single tree of the kind called ṭalḥ. Lane identifies ṭalḥ as the gum-acacia, a large tree of the Hijaz, Egypt and Nubia with curved thorns and very hard wood, and records old Arabian stories about it, including a gum-acacia near Mecca that was worshipped as an idol until it was cut down. The Quran mentions ṭalḥ manḍūd among the delights of Paradise (56:29); some English translations render this as banana trees, and name lists give Talha as "fruitful tree" or "banana tree". The name is honoured above all through Ṭalḥa ibn ʿUbayd Allāh, one of the earliest companions of the Prophet.
