Tapasi meaning
Tapasi (तापसी) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, ता, it is a Tula rashi name (Swati nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
A female ascetic
Also used to mean: one devoted to penance
Tapasi (तापसी) is the Sanskrit tāpasī, the feminine of tāpasa, "one who practises austerity", from tapas, the spiritual discipline of the forest sages. Monier-Williams gives tāpasī as "a female ascetic", the word used in the Mahābhārata and in Kālidāsa's Śakuntalā for the women of the hermitage; lexicons also apply it to two fragrant plants, zedoary and spikenard. Name lists give Tapasi as "female ascetic" or "one devoted to penance", which matches the dictionary. The actress Taapsee Pannu spells the same name with a double a.
