Ashwini meaning
Ashwini (अश्विनी) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, अ, it is a Mesh rashi name (Krittika nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
The first nakshatra; the consort of the Ashvin twins
Ashwini (अश्विनी) is the name of the first nakshatra, or lunar mansion, at the head of the constellation Aries. Monier-Williams records aśvinī in this sense, and in the Ṛgveda also as the consort of the Aśvins, the twin horsemen who appear before dawn in a golden chariot and heal gods and mortals. The word comes from aśva, "horse". Name lists give "first nakshatra", in line with the dictionary, and the name can be given to girls born under this star. Ashwini is used across India; a well-known bearer is the badminton player Ashwini Ponnappa.
