Avni meaning
Avni (अवनी) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, अ, it is a Mesh rashi name (Krittika nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
The earth
Avni (अवनी) is the Sanskrit avanī, "the earth", which Monier-Williams cites from the Rāmāyaṇa and the Pañcatantra. The related form avani has further senses in the dictionary: the course or bed of a river, a stream, and the ground. Name lists give Avni as "earth" or "mother earth", in line with the dictionary, and some link it with the earth goddess. A separate avanī on an earlier page of Monier-Williams is the name of a plant and of a river and is not the source of the name. The spelling Avani, also used in India, is closer to the Sanskrit, while Avni reflects the way the middle vowel is dropped in everyday Hindi speech.
