Mahi meaning
Mahi (मही) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin, also used for boys.
The great world, the earth
Mahi (मही) is Sanskrit mahī, the feminine of mah, "great". Used on its own it means the great world, the earth, and Monier-Williams also gives it as space and as the name of a river. The earth is called "the great one" in this way in many compounds, such as mahīpati, "lord of the earth", an old word for a king. Indian name lists give Mahi as "earth" or "great", in line with the dictionary. The name is short, easy to say in every Indian language and simple to spell abroad. The spelling माही (Maahi), with a long first vowel, is also used in Hindi and Punjabi; it may have a separate origin, which this entry does not cover.
