Mahalingam meaning
Mahalingam (மகாலிங்கம்) is a Tamil and Hindu boy's name.
Shiva in the form of a great linga
Mahalingam (மகாலிங்கம்) is the Tamil form of Sanskrit mahā-liṅga, "the great linga". The Tamil Lexicon defines it simply as Shiva in the form of a great linga, the aniconic emblem under which he is worshipped in his temples, and Monier-Williams records mahā-liṅga as an epithet of Shiva. The name is closely tied to the Mahalingeswarar temple at Thiruvidaimarudur near Kumbakonam, whose presiding deity is called Mahalingam. It is a traditional Shaiva boy's name in Tamil Nadu and is also used as a surname.
In Hindu tradition this is a name of Shiva.
